AUTOMATIC WATCHES
If your new automatic watch is running too fast or too slow or seems to have stopped, don't panic. An automatic watch is an investment of time and effort, and unlike quartz (battery-powered) watches, it may take a while for it to start keeping good time. This is especially true for lower-end (i.e., non-"chronometer") automatic watches. In order for your watch to start keeping good time, the mainspring must be fully wound first. The way to do this is to use a watch winder or to shake and wear the watch continuously. You will also need to start the watch by turning the crown clockwise 40 to 50 times. Like most mechanical devices, a new automatic watch (or one that hasn't been used in a while) has a break-in period that lasts about a month. During this time, the watch is distributing oil and breaking in its gears. You will need to wear the watch or have a watch winder do the work.
Here are some simple steps you can follow to set your watch too:
Remove the clock at night and position it as follows:
1. If your watch is slow: Place it face up.
2. If your watch is fast: Lay the watch upright with the crown facing down.
3. If your watch is too fast: Place the watch vertically with the crown facing up.
If your watch is still running very fast or slow, the most likely cause is that the mainspring may be stuck in one of the screws inside the watch. To free it, try this: Place the watch in the palm of your hand with the crystal facing down and slap the watch. If this has freed the mainspring, it should start to make good time.
For the watch to have a full power reserve, it must be worn for at least 8 hours a day. If you have not worn the watch for a couple of days, restart the watch by turning the crown clockwise 30 to 40 times.
If you have given your watch time to settle and tried the steps above, it should start keeping good time. You can also take your watch to a local watch shop and they should be able to adjust it (or free the mainspring if it is stuck) for you for a small fee. Since automatic watches require periodic maintenance to keep good time, our warranty does not cover periodic maintenance on these watches. We really can't afford to offer low prices on watches + maintenance for automatic watches, so if you need maintenance within the first 2 years, you will be charged a nominal fee of 20 Euro.
